Primary school pupils have produced artwork depicting the changing faces of their village down the centuries.

Huncoat Primary School children spent months on the watercolour paintings and aluminium mouldings, which have now been installed at Huncoat Station.

The school was approached by East Lancashire artist Alastair Nicholson, who was given a remit by National Rail to develop a theme for the station.

Deputy headteacher Phil Clarke said Mr Nicholson worked with students to create a 16ft by 4ft banner before visiting a foundry to create aluminium casts.

He said: “The theme was to look at the transition from Huncoat’s industrial past with the power stations and the mines and the return back to nature.”

Mr Clarke said they want the station to become a showcase for Huncoat.

He said: “It will be a permanent reminder to the children and the wider community of Huncoat about the transition that’s taken place here over many years.”

Barbara Russell, of the Hands on Huncoat group, attended the ceremony and praised the pupils for their hard work.

She said: “The children have been working for months and doing a lot of artwork.

“It is now on the station shelter and looks very nice.”

She added: “It was an excellent day and there was a really good turnout.”
