Hundreds of people gathered for the Oswaldtwistle Christmas lights switch-on.

Pupils from St Andrew's CE primary school entertained the crowd on Wednesday night by singing carols, and the lights were switched on by Carnival Queen Stephanie Moore.

Readings were also given by young people from the Civic Arts Centre while Fr John Holland gave the blessing of the crib.

Vandals had targeted the Christmas tree at Jubilee Gardens only a few days before the ceremony, but ward councillor Peter Britcliffe said everything went 'all right on the night'.

He said: “After all the trauma of the previous 24 hours everything went well and the council did a very good job in making good the lights. “The tree looked extremely nice when it was lit by the Carnival Queen.

“There were a good few hundred people there and had a very enjoyable time.

“We started having the annual lights switch-on since 2000 and it has become a tradition in the town.”
