A loving husband died just days after learning his wife had been fatally injured.

Stewart and Norah Graham, both 85, were involved in a road crash on the day of their 65th wedding anniversary. Norah died in hospital shortly after the accident on May 4.

And the pensioner, who broke his neck, lost his battle for life today - just three days after family revealed the terrible news.

The Lancashire couple's family waited five days before breaking the news to the stricken Mr Graham.

Daughter Eilieen told the MEN: “When he heard the news about my mum - maybe he gave up knowing it was his time to go too."

The Accrington couple were in a car collided head-on with another vehicle on Barrowford Road in Fence.

The were both taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital with serious injuries, where Mr Graham, a former aircraft engineer,  died today from suspected pneumonia.

But Eileen, 65, said the couple had been 'inseparable' in life and would remain so in death.

She added: "It has been a love story and an ending where they have gone together in the space of a week. personally think it's a better way - knowing what they were like together.

“It has been a blessing. We are hoping to have a joint funeral so they can be together until the very end. Everyone who knew them knows that but it is of course sad for us - we have lost mum and dad together."

"My dad wouldn't have coped without my mother so in that respect it's good they have gone together. I'm grateful he's gone.

“There wasn't too much suffering. The body can only take so much. I think it was pneumonia in the end. He was having difficulty breathing and they had him on painkillers for his broken neck.

The 52-year-old female driver of the other car and a passenger were taken to hospital with whiplash but were later discharged.

Police are continuing to investigate.

A joint funeral will be arranged. The pair leave a son, daughter and a daughter-in-law as well as two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
