Royal wedding fever is set to hit Hyndburn with more than a dozen street parties planned so far.

More parties have been applied for in Accrington to celebrate the occasion than any other area of Lancashire.

And 70 businesses have asked the council to provide commemorative bunting to brighten up their celebrations.

Residents have applied to the council to close the streets across Accrington, Huncoat, Clayton-le-Moors and Altham for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on April 29.

The council will shut down four town centre streets including Warner Street, Bank Street, Cannon Street and Church Street while the pedestrian Broadway will also be used.

The town centre event will include a fairground during the day and a spectacular fireworks display from the top level of the Arndale Centre car park at 8.45pm.

All civic buildings are set to be covered in bunting for the festivities and lights will be switched on in honour of the couple.

One of those who has organised a party is Jacqueline Cronshaw, 42, of Garfield Street, Accrington.

She said: "We are expecting over 30 people to come down including friends, family and children.

"We are always having parties and this is a great excuse to have another one. I am quite patriotic myself and this is a fantastic occasion."

Colette McCormack, who owns two shops on Warner Street, said: "We are hoping to have the street party over Saturday and Sunday.

"Everyone is in on it and everybody wants to be involved in he festivities."

Council leader Peter Britcliffe said: "It’s really good news that Hyndburn is going to be the number one centre in Lancashire when it comes to the Royal wedding.

"I am sure it will be a really big occasion and that everyone involved will have a fantastic time.

"We will have a fairground also have fireworks in the town centre on the night of the wedding and various other events happening too over that weekend."

There are still honorary places at the borough’s Royal wedding celebration for Hyndburn couples celebrating their wedding anniversary on April 29. Ring 01254 380121 for details.
