MORE superb performances across Hyndburn have been revealed as the story of today's GCSE results begins to unfold.

Norden High School headteacher Tim Mitchell praised the pupils for the results and said the Rishton school has ‘bucked the national trend’ of declining grades.

Hannah Fielding and Katie Thompson were the school’s top students with a combined 18 A* or A grades.

Mr Mitchell said: “We are extremely pleased with the 2014 GCSE examination results, the quality of which reflects the hard work of both the students and staff of Norden High School and Sports College.

“Despite the much publicised national trend of schools seeing their overall examination performance declining, we are extremely pleased to report we have recorded an improvement here at Norden.

“However it must be noted that the significant changes to the 2014 GCSE courses that took affect mid-course have undoubtedly made a difference to both individual and collective student performance.”

Liam Barber, 16, from Clayton-le-Moors got two Cs, three Ds, an E and an F and will now study painting and decorating at Accrington and Rossendale College.

The Norden High pupil said: “I was her at Norden in Year 7 and then moved to Cumbria before coming back half-way through Year 10 and the exam boards were completely different.

“I’m really happy with my grades although I would have liked to have gotten Cs in maths and English.

“I’m really pleased with my Cs in art and media though. I’m just glad the waiting is over.”

Norden High pupil Cameron Moores, 16, from Rishton got a distinction in sport, four Bs and three Cs and will now study law, psychology, biology and chemistry A-Levels at St Mary’s College in Blackburn along with a GCSE equivalent in criminology.

She said: “I’ve done better than I though and I’m really happy with my B in physics as I’ve always struggled with that.

“The build up to the results day has not been good. I just cried before I opened them but once I did I calmed down.

“I’m really going to miss Norden as I’ve made some really good friends.”

Natalie Bell, 16, from Huncoat, got a distinction in sport, As in PE and English language, five Bs and C at Norden High.

She will now study A-Levels at Burnley College before flying over to America for a football scholarship.

She said: “I haven’t slept waiting for this day. I’ve just been watching TV and with friends trying to take my mind off it.

“I’m so happy and relieved as they are definitely much better than I thought. I had no idea I would do that good in PE and English.”

Chris Kavanagh, 16, from Altham, got a distinction in sport, As in maths and geography, six Bs and a C and now aims to study A-Levels at Clitheroe Grammar School before either a law or physics degree at university.

The Norden High pupil said: “I’m very happy as it’s what I expected. There weren’t any nasty surprises.

“I’m really pleased with my A in maths as I did a lot of studying which has paid off.

“I was quite confident and calm coming to get my results as I thought I had done okay.”

Norden High’s head Girl Laura Devaney, 16, from Blackburn, achieved an A* in art and design, an A in drama, a B, four Cs and a pass in sport.

The budding young actress will now study A-Levels and B-Tecs at St Mary’s College before hoping to enrol into RADA.

She said: “I started crying when I opened them as I’m really happy.

“I’m really happy with my art grade as I got 298 out of 300 marks and also in drama as I had to do a lot of rehearsing and preparation which has paid off.

“The exams were quite tough this year so I’m delighted to have done well.

“It’s been amazing at Norden and I’m really going to miss my friends. The teachers have been really helpful and are like friends too.”

Mount Carmel top student Yasoob Syed, 16, from Accrington, achieved seven A*s, three As and a B and will go to Clitheroe Grammar School before hoping to study medicine at university.

She said: “It’s the highest results in the school so I’m really proud and happy.

“The A in English is one I’m particularly happy with as I was worried about that. I couldn’t sleep the night before the results day.”

Former Mount Carmel High head boy Sam Bradshaw, 16, from Accrington got an A* in Maths, six As and two Bs.

He will now look to study maths, physics, chemistry and computing and Clitheroe Grammar School.

He said: “I’m really pleased and they were better than I thought I would get. I thought I was only going to get Bs and Cs and that I messed up.

“The night before and the morning of the results is when the nerves really kicked in but I’m very happy now.”

Dominik Kardacz, 16, who is originally from Poland but now lives in Huncoat, got a B, four Cs and a D and will look to study public services at Blackburn College.

The Mount Carmel High pupil said: “I’ve very happy as I was a bit nervous before I arrived.”

Mount Carmel High’s Elloise Dickinson, 16, from Accrington, achieved distinctions in music and sport, six Bs and three Cs.

She will now go to the Brighton Institute music college in Manchester to study guitar professionally.

She said: “I’m definitely happy as they are much better than expected. They were pretty tough exams but I persisted and got through them.

“It’s all paid off in the end but it’s been a very nerve-racking few weeks.”

Usman Ahmed, 16, from Accrington achieved an A in maths, four Bs, four Cs and two Ds at Mount Carmel and will now study biology, chemistry, maths and physics at Clitheroe Grammar School.

He said: “I’m really happy, particularly with the A in maths and my grade in IT..

“It’s been really anxious and suspenseful the last few weeks and it’s a big relief to have the results now. A lot of stress has now gone.”

Former Mount Carmel deputy head girl Sarah Case, 16, from Accrington, achieved an A* in catering, an A in geography, four Bs and three Cs.

She now plans to study A-levels in geology, English language, performing arts and biology at St Christopher’s High School in Accrington.

She said: “I’ve passed everything so that’s all that matters. I didn’t think I would do that well in geography so I’m really pleased.

“I wasn’t thinking about results day but I was really nervous during and just after the exams. It’s been building up and it’s just a relief now.

“I can enjoy the last two weeks of the holidays.”
