Die-hard Accrington Stanley supporter and Sky TV commentator David Lloyd is backing the Reds to win promotion.

Last week we launched our campaign calling on all of the borough to get behind Accrington Stanley as they enter one of the most important periods in their history.

Manager John Coleman and his players are battling to win promotion to the third tier of English football for the first time since the late 1950s.

The Reds are hoping to clinch a place in the play- offs – or even an automatic promotion spot.

Before today’s games, the Reds were one place outside the play-off spots but on the same number of points as three teams above them.

They have four games left to play.

The first of those is a home game against Bradford on Saturday followed by a trip to fourth-placed Shrewsbury on Monday evening.

Lloyd said: “I think Accrington Stanley can do it, I really do. They have got a good squad again this season and I am rooting for them.

“I think it would be terrific for the manager who’s been at the club for 12 years and has been fabulous in that time.

“He’s improved the team every year on a shoestring.

“In my experience any problem off the field usually manifests itself on the field but that is not the case here.

“They have been absolutely fantastic. It’s team with a capital T. I’m absolutely staggered.

“On the field they are doing the business and doing their jobs which is totally unheard of.

“I have nothing but admiration for them and I, like everybody else, is wishing them the very best.”

Accrington-born Lloyd, a former England cricket player, says the players need to take each game one at a time.

He said: “We have the next game to play against Bradford and you don’t look any further than that. Get the three points there and then look ahead to Shrewsbury.

“That game is a massive one. My friend Andy Lloyd, who played cricket for Warwickshire is a massive fan and he’s been texting me all the time about it.

“I hope we can win that one.”

Carl Steen, who supports the club with his wife Adele and daughter Stacey, said: “It’s still in our hands.

“We were disappointed with the result against Oxford but not the performance.

“I think we are still one of the favourites to get into the play-offs. The teams around us still have to play each other and will drop points.

“Everyone is still excited about our chances.  If we can win our home games and not lose our away games we will be there.

“After Bradford is Shrewsbury which will be a tough game but we went there last season and won 1-0.

“We will be taking at least four coaches this time instead of one so everyone is getting behind the club.”
