A man escaped uninjured after the car he was driving skidded and smashed into a tree in Oswaldtwistle.

Firefighters said it was possible leaves on Haslingden Old Road caused the car to come off a bend near where the Coach and Horses pub used to be.

Watch managed Keith Cunliffe, of Hyndburn Fire Station, said: "The man, in his late 20s was driving along the road in a Toyota Yaris.

He ended up hitting the tree. We sent two pumps but he had got himself out of the car before we got there. The battery in the car had been split on impact with the tree and there was smoke. We sorted that out and then left.

"We think the leaves on the road may have caused the road to be slippy. He was lucky not to be injured at all."

Paramedics checked the man's condition at the scene on Friday, September 23. He didn't need hospital treatment.
