A man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering the brother of a former Accrington Stanley captain Peter Cavanagh.

Anthony Cavanagh, 22, was attacked in Liverpool city centre on September 24, 2005 during a night out with friends and died the next month after being in a coma for 11 days.

The Observer reported in October 2005 that his brother and former Reds defender Peter Cavanagh had been left ‘devastated’ by the sailor’s death.

Merseyside Police have arrested a 33-year-old man at a house in Blundellsands on suspicion of murder, and he was taken to a police station where he was interviewed by detectives.

A spokesperson said the man had been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
