An 81-year-old man died after the car he was driving crashed into a stone wall in Oswaldtwistle this morning.

The incident took place on Union Road at around 9.35am on Wednesday morning.

Paramedics and police attended the scene after the driver was believed to have suffered “a medical episode”.

He was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital following the incident but his injuries sadly proved fatal.

A Lancashire police spokesperson said: “At around 9.35am this morning a white Citroen C1 was travelling along Union Road towards Blackburn when it appears to have collided with a stone wall.

“It is believed the driver suffered a medical episode at the wheel but enquiries are ongoing.

"The road was closed for two-and-a-half hours whilst officers conducted a thorough examination of the scene.

"Specially trained officers are now supporting the man’s family."

Senior Investigating Officer, Sergeant Mick Young, said: “This is a very sad incident in which a man has lost his life.

“I would now appeal to anybody that witnessed the collision to contact us, to help us piece together what happened.”
