A man was has been left needing surgery after he was attacked by two Staffordshire bull terriers outside his home.

Police say the 27-year-old man suffered facial and leg injuries during the shocking incident on Fife Street in Accrington

Officers arrived on the scene after being alerted by the 36-year-old victim’s wife.

The dogs have been seized by police.

Inspector John Fryer said the was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital where he is waiting for surgery.

He is currently in a ‘stable condition’ in the surgical triage unit.

Insp Fryer said: “This was a very nasty incident where a man on Fife Street was bitten by two Staffordshire bull terriers.

“He was bitten on the face, leg and side of the body and the injuries are quite nasty.

“He is in hospital now and is going to need surgery.”

Community leaders said they were in shock about the incident.

Ward councillor and Hyndburn Mayor Munsif Dad said: “My sympathy goes out to the person who is injured and I hope the appropriate agencies deal with this.

“It is a very densely populated area with kids playing nearby and there is a play area at the bottom of the road.

“I’m shocked to hear about this and it is worrying that this has happened with the nights getting later as we approach summer. ”

Fellow ward councillor Pam Barton said it was ‘appalling’.

She said: “It is terrible what has happened and I hope the man is all right.

“I go up and down Fife Street a lot and there are always a lot of children playing out. When this kind of thing happens it is very worrying.

There are also elderly people that live nearby too.”

The incident happened at around 8.25pm on Tuesday, March 24 and no other injuries were reported.

A North West Ambulance spokesperson said they received a ‘high priority’ call from police at 8.28pm and arrived six minutes later.

He said: “He was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital and the injuries are not being treated as a major trauma.”

A spokesperson for East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust said the victim is currently being assessed in the surgical triage unit and he is in a ‘stable condition’.

A man from Accrington has been arrested on suspicion of having a dog dangerously out of control in a public place.

He remains in police custody for questioning.
