Two new contestants have entered the running to become Accrington’s 25th carnival queen.

Bethany Donohue, who lives in Accrington, likes socialising, listening to music and surfing the web. The 18-year-old wants to become a primary school teacher and work with disadvantaged children.

Jasmine Amber Smith, 24, who also lives in Accrington, enjoys arts and crafts, music and reading and being outdoors. In the future, she plans to travel and own a business.

The Carnival Queen competition, organised by the Accrington Lions, will now be held on May 28 at The Brooks Club on Infant Street - a change from the original date and venue.

May Edmundson, from the Accrington Lions, said: “We’re hoping this will encourage more supporters to come along and support the girls.”

Girls over 16, who live or work in Hyndburn and want to partake, can collect application forms from Barbara Kay Shoes and Accessories, All The Rage - or download them from www.accringtoncarnival.co.uk .

They should also call Tracy Simmonds on 07971 772168 or May Edmundson on 07806 093068 to arrange a photograph. The application deadline is May 22.

May said: “There’s no upper age limit - it’s not just open for young girls, it’s open for anybody. It’s a good confidence boost and I would encourage people of all ages to apply.”

The new Carnival Queen will be a judge the Carnival Princess competition alongside Princess Elsa from Frozen, who will appear as a special guest.

The Carnival Princess event, which is open to up to 40 Hyndburn girls between 6 and 11 years, will be held at Oswaldtwistle Mills on May 30, from 9.30am.

Princesses-to-be can collect application forms from Oswaldtwistle Mills, Barbara Kay Shoes or online at www.accringtoncarnival.co.uk .
