AN MP has backed a campaign to get a viaduct path reopened.

Hyndburn MP Graham Jones has written to Lancashire County Council to try and secure the reopening of the Martholme Viaduct in Great Harwood.

The path was closed in 2001 after the outbreak of foot and mouth and has remained closed since.

Mr Jones’ backing comes after an online petition to reopen the 800m stretch of disused railway line garnered 400 signatures.

Mr Jones MP said: “I am supporting this campaign and have written to Lancashire County Council for information on the council’s current position in relation to the viaduct and path.

“A lot of public money has already been invested in the Hyndburn and Padiham Greenways and this closed 800m stretch of path is an obstacle to safe walking and cycling and linking the two greenways.”

Mr Jones added: “There is a lot of history connected to the area in relation to the railway, the colliery and the Grade II listed viaduct but there are currently no information boards or leaflets available.

“I will support the group to secure funding for the design and production of these.” The campaign has brought together several people who are now going to set up a constituted community group especially for Martholme.

The campaigners are also talking to Sustrans and Railway Paths in relation to the opening of the viaduct.

Spokesman Dr John Barker said the group did not want to just lobby to reopen the path but also wanted to undertake community projects in the area.

He said: “We don’t want to be just a lobbying and campaigning group we want to take positive action to protect the area for wildlife and future generations.

“I have family connections to the colliery and have already done a lot of research and I want to make sure the history of the area is shared with visitors and isn’t lost over time.

“If the viaduct was opened then volunteers will be needed to undertake practical activities in relation to clearing of trees and growth that could damage the Grade II listed viaduct.”

Despite the widespread support for the path to be reopened, earlier this month the Observer reported claims that a ‘legitimate case’ for the path could not be made.

Speaking to the Observer earlier this month Lancashire County councillor (LCC) Gareth Molineux said: “Given that the decision was considered by the Secretary of State at appeal, LCC is confident that a reappraisal of this decision is unjustified.”
