A DRUNKEN Accrington man subjected his girlfriend to a vicious assault, bringing shame on his devout Muslim family.
Khalid Hussain's victim, mother-of-two Marie Lord, thought she was going to die during the onslought as he repeatedly attacked her and tried to strangle her.
Burnley Crown Court heard that bank worker Miss Lord, aged 44, who had pleaded with the defendant to stop, finally escaped and was taken to the police station by occupants of a passing car.
Hussain, whose father is the head of a local mosque, admitted assault causing actual bodily harm, but a judge said she was surprised he had not been charged with a more serious offence.
The court heard Hussain had a lot to drink and that and he had bought so much disgrace upon his family his father was ashamed to go out.
Hussain was given nine-months in jail, suspended for two years.. He must also pay £170 compensation.
