A Dalek invaded Accrington in 1973. Former Observer photographer Garth Dawson snapped this picture of the alien robot in July of that year.

The Dalek, made famous by long-running TV series Doctor Who, was placed in the grounds at St James’ church in the town and the creation was used to raise money for church funds.

Garth says the picture is a bit of a mystery.

He said:  “I have no idea what it was doing there.

“I just got the children to pose with it, maybe someone else will know.”

Pictured are Catherine Foster, Ann Aspinal and Claire Cormack.

Perhaps readers can shed some light on the picture.
