Market tenants gathered for their annual dinner and dance in 1963. Garth says the event was held for Accrington Market workers at the Swan Hotel in Clitheroe.

Pictured is the Mayor of Accrington Jack Duckworth and his wife with the traders.

Garth added this was at a time when the markets were thriving.

It’s almost time for the mayor making ceremonies – which are held in May – so Garth sent us this picture of the ceremony in 1977.

Pictured is the incoming mayor Jessie Hall MBE along with her mayoress and friend Freda Coe, dressing her in the ceremonial garments of the occasion.

Garth said Miss Hall was not married and had chosen her friend to fill the role.

He said: “They had to have someone be mayoress even if the mayor wasn’t married so they sometimes did ask a friend.”

He added that Jessie was a teacher at Holy Family school and is pictured with two of her pupils.

Finally, a house in Accrington could be bought for just £30 40 years ago.

Garth Dawson snapped this picture of the terraced home in 1966 and compared it with house prices now which start at around £20,000.

Garth said there were a lot of cheaper terrace homes around at that time.

He said: “I’m not sure there were any others for quite that price but they were all low round there. I can’t quite remember what street it was though, maybe someone will know.”

He added that the housing market could do with more low-priced homes now.
