Excitement is growing ahead of the revival of a long lamented carnival.

The Oswaldtwistle Carnival returns this summer after an absence of 16 years. Organised by the Oswaldtwistle Town Team, thousands of people are expected to watch a procession through the town and join in fun activities at Rhyddings Park.

Former Mayoress of Hyndburn Sarah Barton is helping to organise the June 22 event and said the response so far has been fantastic.

She said: “It is carnival fever, we’ve had so many supportive comments and more and more people are getting involved and joining the committee.

"It’s like a phoenix rising from the ashes. People are so excited to have a big event in Oswaldtwistle.”

Entry is now open for the free carnival prince and princess competition which is open to children aged four to 11 and 12 to 16 for boys and girls. Entry is free and open to all Hyndburn residents.

All entrants receive a goody bag and the contest will be judged by the last carnival queen and princess.

Photographs for the contest can be booked at Heartfelt and Cherished Photography on Union Road, Oswaldtwistle.

Members of the carnival committee are also selling raffle tickets to cover the costs of the event.

Tickets are 20p each or £1 a strip and are being sold in schools and businesses as well as at Vine Mill and at Barton and Haworth Funeral Service.
