OBSERVER reporter Laura Sharpe has won a top trophy at the annual Newspaper Society awards.

Laura, 26, who has been with the paper for just over a year, took the title of Best News Journalist, Paid-For Weekly Newspapers, in competition with reporters from all over the country.

Laura, who lives in Middleton, Manchester, was presented with a silver trophy and certificate at a glittering ceremony at the Marriot Forest of Arden Hotel near Coventry.

The portfolio of work which won her the coveted prize included a story exposing a drug dealer in Church and a murder trial background piece.

Judges said her work showed good links with contacts in the community.
