The legends - taken from a paranormal activity database website - range from the horrifying to the ridiculous.

The ghostly figure of a screaming girl is said to drift quietly down Black Abbey Road, in Accrington, screaming only if approached.

It is believed she was burnt to death after having a love affair with one of the Abbey monks.

Meanwhile, apple 'rain' was said to have fallen for more than an hour in the town. An estimated 300 apples rained down on several houses at East Crescent.

Elsewhere, a nightwatchman reported that an icy entity had taken hold of his arm during a terrifying experience at Broad Oak printing works, in Accrington.

As a result of his report, a tape recorder was left in the same room to see what it would pick up.

On playback, the tape was filled with the sounds of working print equipment, though nothing had been activated whilst the recording was in action.

One of Hyndburn’s most famous ghosts is Lucette, who is said to haunt Dunkenhalgh Hall, in Clayton-le-Moors.

A former maid at the hall, Lucette fell pregnant after a torrid affair with the master and took her own life.

The maid’s misty white form is said to return each year around Christmas to remind others of her fate.

At a council house on Burns way, Great Harwood, five shadowy figures, each ninety centimetres tall, were seen emerging from a fireplace and crossing a bedroom until they reached another dark figure wearing a crown sitting in a chair.

Each of the five shadows offered a gift to the seated figure before they turned and walked back to the fireplace.
