A 77-year-old woman lost control of her car and landed upside down in a river.

The woman was leaving the Asda store on Hyndburn Road in Accrington at around 2pm this afternoon when she lost control and went through a metal fence into the river.

Fire crews from Hyndburn Fire Station waded through the water to rescue the woman from the car.

Crew manager Chris Archer said: “The car went through the metal fence and toppled over and landed on it's top.

“It's a fast flowing river and when we got to the lady she was confined but not trapped in the vehicle. She was not in a fit enough state so we had to carry her up the embankment.

“Nobody could get into Asda car park and there was quite a long tailback down Hyndburn Road.

Chris Archer also paid tribute to an Asda employee for helping the lady before the firefighters arrived.

He added: “He helped her and prevented her head from being in the water as it was on the inside of the car. He was talking to her and keeping her reassured until we arrived. He did a fantastic job and went above and beyond the call of duty.”

The woman suffered minor injuries and was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital for treatment.
