The derelict Accrington fire station could be transformed into a distribution centre for an e-cigarette manufacturer creating up to 30 jobs.

The Grade II listed building on Manchester Road has been empty for 14 years after the fire service transferred to the new station on Hyndburn Road.

Peter Cropper, managing director of Totally Wicked E-Liquid based in Blackburn, said they now want to transfer and expand the UK Vapour Brands part of the business into the building.

The redevelopment would include offices, a warehouse distribution facility, small shop, roof garden, a gym and the demolition of existing outbuildings.

Mr Cropper, 49, who was born in Accrington, said it will bring ‘much needed investment’ into that part of the town and create new jobs.

He said: “It’s an iconic building that has been left fallow for a long time. We saw it for sale last year and bought it as we recognised the building required saving and some investment.

“The application has been submitted and we think it’s going to be favourable. It will be a significant investment in the location and there will be employment opportunities for the town.

“We have about 30 staff and there is the potential to double that in the next 24 months if we are as successful as we can be.”

Mr Cropper said their plans will retain the heritage of the building which dates back to 1933 and work could be completed by Spring 2017 if the scheme is approved.

He also didn’t rule out the possibility of expanding into the soon-to-be vacant court and police station if the business expansion is successful.

He said: “It’s going to be a cracking building and something the town and we as a company can be proud of.

“We are expecting the building work to commence later this year and it will take six to eight months.”

Documents sent to Hyndburn Council by Peter Dickinson Architects said they will be ‘lovingly restoring a heritage building’ and ‘an exciting and unique work environment’.

Hyndburn council leader Miles Parkinson said: “It’s pleasing that companies are now coming forward with plans and creating jobs.

“It is very important that their design is in keeping with the building and we are working closely with the company so it still retains it’s notable style and presence.”
