Plans to expand the Hyndburn wind farm in Oswaldtwistle have been recommended for approval by planning bosses.

Proposals have been submitted to Hyndburn council for the erection of four 122-metre high wind turbines on land at Oswaldtwistle Moor off Haslingden Road, for a period of 25 years.

The plan is infill to the existing 12-turbine wind farm, and the bid also outlines plans to create access tracks, crane pads and underground electrical cabling.

The application by Energie Kontor outlines the area in which the proposed turbines are to be built to fill in the gaps between existing turbines.

The report stated: “The application site is not within any international or national ecological designations but parts of the existing wind farm site have been designated as a Biological Heritage Site.”

A number of objections against the plans have been lodged, including an objection from Rossendale council.

Rossendale council has expresssed concern that some of the blades could oversail the boundary between the two boroughs.

A spokesperson for Energie Kontor said: “We are delighted that the officer has recommended approval of the infill wind turbines at Oswaldtwistle Moor and that the support for the proposal has come from a number of residents and community groups. The proposal includes for a comprehensive mitigation package which will continue the enhancement of the moor, building on the work which was undertaken for the original wind farm.

“We hope that the councillors will appreciate the efforts we have gone to ensure that the proposal maximises the benefits whilst minimising the impacts and reach a favourable decision for further clean renewable energy in Hyndburn District.”

The wind farm on Oswaldtwistle Moor has been in operation since October 2012 and generates enough electricity for more than 30,000 homes.

A decision will be made on the proposal at the planning committee on Wednesday, June 24.
