Pupils have been working hard to combat cars parking on zig-zag lines outside their school.

The ‘Road Safety Team’ at St Bartholomew’s CE Primary School in Great Harwood has been stopping cars pulling up and dropping children off on the zig-zag lines on Ash Street.

Kathryn Haczycki, deputy headteacher, said: “They have been out before and after school taking down registration numbers in an attempt to deter cars.”

Posters have also been put up inside the school to raise awareness with one from a year four pupil saying ‘We are not safe if cars keep parking on and pulling up onto the zig-zag lines’.

The Observer reported last year how all five schools in Great Harwood had joined forces with police to set up a school ambassador initiative aimed at tackling the growing problem of motorists parking on double yellow and zig-zag lines outside schools.

Under the scheme students are able to take down registration numbers of offending vehicles and issue them with a specially designed penalty notice.
