A HOODED raider brought terror to a village post office when he kicked the postmistress and smashed a glass panel in a bid to steal cash.
The would-be robber, who escaped after being disturbed by a customer, pushed and kicked the 77-year-old postmistress at Stanhill sub-post office in Stanhill Lane, Oswaldtwistle.
After smashing a glass panel he jumped onto the counter in an attempt to get at the cash room. But his robbery attempt was foiled by a customer and other members of staff who confronted him.
The offender made his getaway empty-handed, and was pursued by the customer who eventually lost sight of him in Miller Close. The teenager had been seen acting suspiciously outside the post office before the incident.
A CID spokesman said: "He made off down Aspen Lane on a silver-coloured mountain bike in the direction of the canal at West End.''
The offender was white, aged between 16 and 18, from 5ft 6ins to 5ft 10ins tall and of medium build. He was wearing a distinctive fluorescent anorak with a hood.
The police spokesman added: "We would appeal for any witnesses or anyone with any information to get in touch with us. We are very anxious to catch this person before he causes any more mayhem.''
