Dozens of Hyndburn cyclists are among those set to saddle up for a bike-friendly day this weekend.

Two-wheeled transport will take over the roads for the Great Manchester Cycle, with some major closed to cars on Sunday, June 30. The event aims to encourage more people to give cycling a go – or improve their existing bicycling skills.

A range of distances will be available for people to ride – so everyone from experienced racers to complete novices can take part. Last year more than 7,000 people took part, with around 8,000 expected this year. Three distances are available depending on how many times the circular route is completed.

The race will be launched by Olympic cyclist Joanna Rowsell, who won gold in last year’s team pursuit in the London games. The 25-year-old said: “It’s great to see the Great Manchester Cycle returning for a second year as it’s such a fantastic event.

“To be able to explore 13 miles of closed roads will be a really unique experience.” Places are still available on the 13 and 26-mile routes, while the 52-mile route is now sold out.

Anyone who wants to take part needs to register online for their race pack and entry information.

Cycling helmets are also compulsory for everyone.

Entry for each route costs £20 per adult and £5 per child. To enter, go to greatcycle.org.
