A FORMER Hyndburn Mayor is calling for better vetting of council tenants after yobs forced one resident to move out of her home.

A furious Councillor Dave Parkins spoke out this week after hearing that the woman had been driven out of her flat on Oakhurst Avenue, Huncoat.

He said: "Huncoat is getting some right scum bags and we are sick of it. This is a decent law-abiding lady and she is sick to the back teeth of these people.

"We need the council to get to grips with this situation, vet these people properly and put a stop to these problems.

"She has been in there a couple of years and it's a shame. There has been a lot of money spent doing up these flats and its just money down the drain. Someone even smashed five windows the other night."

Councillor Parkins told Tuesday's meeting of Huncoat Area Council that Hyndburn Council was not putting its tenancy agreements into practice, adding: "These people sign the agreements and they should be made to stick to them. If they don't they should be kicked out, it's as simple as that.

"These people sit on their backsides all day drinking and playing loud music and it's ruining the peace and quiet for everyone else."

Councillor Parkins said he had also received complaints about up to five tenants staying in one flat and people keeping two dogs when they were only allowed one.

Hyndburn Council's principal officer for tenants' services, Nigel Fenton, said: "We have received reports of noise nuisance on Oakhurst Avenue.

"We have already carried out an investigation and are monitoring the situation. We would urge any tenants still experiencing problems to contact their neighbourhood housing officer on 388811, who will investigate and advise them on how we can tackle the problems."
