A taste of the seaside will be brought to the town centre this Bank Holiday weekend in a major event in Accrington.

Revellers can walk along the street and relive their childhood memories of trips to the coast in the ‘Oh I do like to be beside the Seaside’ event.

Warner Street will be completely closed off for the festival on Sunday, May 29 from 12-5pm.

Organised by Evonne Harwood and Kathryn Furey, the community event will include a beach and specially commissioned Accrington rock from Blackpool.

Evonne said: “We’ve got something for everyone, we’ve got a beach set up on Bank Street, which is basically a massive sand pit, and we will be holding traditional seaside competitions including Knobbly Knees and Bonny baby.

“We also have children’s entertainment, including a Punch and Judy show, and donkey rides.

“We’ve got samba drummers and a full brass band at St James’ Church and vintage fairground rides for the children.”

The 1960s will be alive and well as the mods and rockers will be doing a ride in at 1pm and their vehicles will be on display in the church yard.

Some of the mods will have their own stall and the proceeds of that will go to Lauren’s Place charity.

Evonne added: “Some of the pubs will have bands on and the Abbey are holding a sixties disco and there will also be bingo.

“There will be craft stalls, street food, Accrington rock on sale, we’ve got something for everyone at this event.”

Evonne, who also organised the Dickensian Christmas event on Warner Street, which attracted around 7,000 people, said the town needed a bit of cheering up.

She said: “This event is all about creating memories, children will tell their children how they made sand castles in the middle of Warner Street in 2016 and how they listened to a real live brass band.

“The whole event is free, there are free activities going on for children, the rides aren’t free but you can come along and have a great time. We’re hoping we can do it as well as our event and Christmas and everyone can have a great day out that doesn’t cost the earth.”
