Pupils were treated to a seaside trip with a difference to help boost their writing skills.

Instead of travelling to the beach, staff at Great Harwood Primary School created a seaside scene setting in the school hall.

Julie Ault, headteacher, said it was the first of several scenarios the pupils will be shown as part of an enrichment programme.

She said: “As children are full of questions about the world around them at Great Harwood Primary School, we wish to motivate these questions by providing experiences to enrich children’s understanding of a variety of scenarios.

“So many children have not been lucky enough to visit the North Pole, the moon or even a seaside beach. Each teacher will take it in turns to create a scene in the school hall for all the children to visit and enjoy the benefits of the sights, sounds and smells. The enrichment this week was a beach scene.”

Mrs Ault said the students received a letter the night before the beach scenario asking them to bring summer clothes to change into.

She said: “The classes, in turns, visited the beach where they explored the exciting activities including eating an ice pop, writing a postcard, taking iPad photographs, listening to and recording sounds, playing in sand, exploring seaweed, observing shells with magnifying glasses, pirate dress up and reading books on the beach.

“We hope that, by exploring first hand an enriched day on a beach, the children have been enthused to include in their writing any words which will improve their writing. The children and the staff eagerly await the next scene to be created.”
