A budding young stockbroker made a killing on the markets to reach the regional final of an investment competition.

Declan Bateson, from Oswaldtwistle, was part of the ‘five foot FTSEs’ team which made nearly £20,000 while trading in virtual shares in just three months, outperforming the FTSE 100 share index in the process.

The team of four students, which also included Ben Ellison from Accrington, was competing against more than 40,000 other students across the UK in the IFS Student Investor Challenge.

The contest provides teams with £100,000 of virtual money to buy and sell shares in FTSE 100 companies, giving them experience of share dealing and the stock market.

The four stockmarket whizzes represented Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Blackburn at the North England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland regional final, held in Leeds.
