Leader of Hyndburn Conservative group Peter Britcliffe has announced he is stepping down.

Coun Britcliffe, who has served leader of the group on Hyndburn Council for nearly 23 years, said he will not be seeking re-election for party leader at their Annual General Meeting on May 13.

He said: “I have enjoyed my time as Party Leader tremendously, but I feel now as though its time to hand over the reigns and let someone else have a go.

“I turned 65 this year, and while I have no intention of retiring, I have a lot of positive things going on in my life with my family and the Café that I run in Accrington Market, and I think now is the time to make more space for these.

“I will of course continue to serve my constituents as a District and County Councillor, but it just feels like the right time to let one of the other councillors step forward and take over the leadership while the party is in such good shape locally.”

Deputy Mayor of Hyndburn Coun Marlene Haworth said: “Peter has been a major figure in the Conservative Party for over twenty years, and he will definitely be a hard act to follow.

“During his time as leader of the Council we achieved a huge amount, steadying the Councils finances, undertaking major regeneration projects and securing an “Excellent” rating from the Audit Commission for the quality and efficiency of our services.

“I know that one of Peter’s proudest achievements was working with the Lord Lieutenant on the arrangements to host the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee visit to Lancashire in 2012 so I’m sure he will take many happy memories with him and will be proud of his track record here.”

Coun Britcliffe added: “The Party is in great shape locally and there are a number of excellent candidates who could fill the role. This is obviously a sad time for me in some respects, but its also an exciting time when I can think about my priorities and make the most of what life has to offer.”
