Plans to create a state-of-the-art training facility for ‘engineers of the future’ have been approved by Hyndburn Council.

Electricity North West was granted permission in May to build the centre at its Whitebirk depot but wanted to make better use of the land.

The Observer reported last month how the new proposals included creating an outdoor training area at the site.

Planning officers have now approved the development using delegated powers and the utilities company now awaits approval from Blackburn with Darwen Council on Thursday, October 18.

Bosses said the centre will allow them to create 150 engineering jobs over the next few years as well as recruit apprentices, A-level entrants and graduates.

Up to 12 teaching staff positions will be created and the centre will be used by up to 90 students each day.

The company, which owns and maintains the North West’s electricity network, currently has training facilities across Lancashire, including Hoscar. Bosses said there was a ‘pressing need’ to relocate the facilities into a single base and added that Whitebirk was their top choice after considering a number of other Lancashire sites.
