YOUNGSTERS in Springhill, Accrington, are dicing with death in a daring skateboard "game".

Residents said that youngsters are riding down Spring Street on skateboards at high speed and shooting straight across the junction at the bottom of the street into the path of oncoming traffic.

They said it is only a matter of time before somebody is killed or seriously injured and urged parents to warn their children of the dangers.

Concerned resident Diane Fielding said: "The kids come from the top of Spring Street, on the pavement right past the doors of the houses off the kerbs and out onto Stevenson Street West.

"It is frightening because they build up some speed. If somebody steps out of their house into their path, either that person or the child is going to end up seriously hurt. If they aren't on the pavement they are on the road. Motorists don't stop at that junction as it stands - people don't look. It is a safety issue more than anything else. It is an accident waiting to happen and somebody is going to get killed."

PC Mick Walsh, Community Beat Manager for Central, Springhill and Fern Gore, reiterated the residents' warnings.

He added: "We are not looking at it as a policing issue as much as a safety issue.

"Motorists drive at speed and there are so many junctions there. We don't want anybody to get hurt and God forbid, any fatalities. We want parents to know what their children are doing."
