Snooker trophies dating back to the 1920s have been found in a former league secretary’s house.

Gordon Mason, who was in charge of the Accrington and District Sunday Schools League, kept hold of the trophies after the league folded nearly 15 years ago.

One of the trophies was sponsored by the Accrington Observer and Times, which later became the Accrington Observer.

The trophy shows annual winners between 1926 and 1991.

Mr Mason, 57, from Accrington, also found two other trophy shields sponsored by E.J Riley, the Riley Challenge Trophy and The Riley Challenge Shield.

He said: “Being the last secretary of the league when it folded I ended up with the trophies. I was having a clean up recently and came across them and thought they shouldn’t be left hiding away.

"They should be seen by other people or returned to whoever might claim them.”

Mr Mason, who works with Hyndburn council’s parks department, played in the league for a decade and said dozens of people were involved in its heyday.

He said: “All the churches came together to form a league and we played each other. There were churches and groups all over Hyndburn at places like Cambridge Street, Spring Hill, Mount Pleasant in Oswaldtwistle and Cannon Street. I played in the league for about 10 years but sadly I never got my hands on the trophy as a winner. I think the league folded because there was a lack of interest and also a few churches were closing or selling off their snooker rooms and tables.”
