Snow has caused chaos across Hyndburn this morning with six schools confirmed shut.

Long delays have also been reported on the M65, M66, A666 and other roads throughout the borough.

More snow is expected throughout today with an 'Amber' weather warning being issued by the Met Office.

The schools that are confirmed closed include: Broadfield Specialist School, Mount Carmel High School, Hollins Technology College, Baxenden St John's primary school, Accrington Green Haworth CE primary school and St John's Stonefold primary school in Rising Bridge.

Drivers across the north are being urged by the Highways Agency, in conjunction with the Met Office, to take extra care on motorways and major A roads.

The North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust is also asking residents to take care during the bad weather.

Derek Cartwright, director of operations, said: “Severe weather has a huge impact on the service as we, like all other road users, have to negotiate the hazardous driving conditions.

“There is always an increase in the number of road traffic collisions and falls and therefore I ask that the public only take necessary journeys.

“If you do need to travel, make sure you are prepared for extended journey times.

“We would also ask that the public be aware of any vulnerable neighbours and to ensure that they are not adversely affected.”

Lancashire Police said there have been reports of 19 accidents in East Division, which includes Hyndburn, so far today

Officers imposed a temporary closure of Grane Road, however this has now been lifted.
