A THRILLING fairground ride - one of only four in the world - is being brought to Accrington to help celebrate the annual Mayor-making ceremony.

The Speed Flip ride, made by the Italian Moser company, has been shipped all the way from Milan and will be wowing the crowds in a town centre pageant on 21 May.

The ride, which stands around 40ft tall, features a central column with four arms extending from it and chairs for people to sit in.

These are then spun around at different angles to give the ultimate white-knuckle experience.

This year's Mayor-making ceremony will see Councillor Janet Storey installed in the traditional way with a procession to St James' Church, Accrington, on 19 May followed by a civic lunch.

To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War the procession will also include representatives of the Royal British Legion.

Between 19 and 22 May there will also be a number of fairground rides and stalls on Blackburn Road in front of the Market Hall.

Council leader Peter Britcliffe said: "Last year we had our Hyndburn 30 celebrations to celebrate the three decades since the forming of the borough.

"This year we have a full programme of events in store and it will be a big attraction. This will help bring people into the town and it should be a good weekend."
