JOINER Andy Maher was stunned when he discovered a crumbling old copy of the Observer featuring Accrington Stanley's last match against Aldershot in 1962.

For Andy found the paper just two days before the Reds kicked off their new season in the Conference last weekend ... against the very same team!

The 50-year-old, of Haslingden Old Road, Oswaldtwistle, unearthed the paper while working on a rotten window frame at the Adelphi pub in Avenue Parade, Accrington. It had been pushed behind the wooden panels to act as insulation.

Keen Stanley fan Andy said: "I couldn't believe it when I looked at the match report. It was such a coincidence. I'm definitely going to keep it."

The paper is dated Saturday 10 February 1962. Stanley drew 2-2 away at Aldershot. The attendance was 6,998.
