An arson investigation has been launched after stairs in a derelict Accrington house were set on fire last night.

Firefighters said someone must have broken into the home on Booth Street at around 8.40pm.

Crew manager Rob Birtwistle said: "The rear door to the house was open when we arrived. Luckily someone spotted the fire nearby and alerted us. It could have spread around the house if we hadn't been told. The house is part of a regeneration site. There are lots of houses boarded up around there, including ones on Royds Street."
