ACCRINGTON town centre's nightlife could be transformed if proposals for a new state-of-the-art nightclub complex are approved.

Property tycoon Kevin Cosgrove hopes to re-vamp the semi-derelict upper floors of Burtons Buildings, opposite Accrington Town Hall on Blackburn Road, in a £1M redevelopment that could create up to 30 jobs.

The transformation would happen in two phases and the club could be open by next year.

The first phase would see the top floor of the building become a nightclub. The second would create a multi-purpose function room to be used for exhibitions, dances, amateur dramatics, jazz nights, shows and teenage discos.

Mr Cosgrove could not be contacted for comment yesterday but Councillor Peter Britcliffe, leader of Hyndburn Council, said: "I think this is wonderful news for Accrington town centre and its night-time economy."

Complaints about Accrington's stagnant nightlife, which saw an exodus of clubbers to neighbouring towns, were eased last month when the new Industry nightclub opened on Church Street.
