A talented young boxer from Great Harwood is learning the ropes fast after competing in an amateur tournament.

Jack Howes, 14, qualified for the semi-finals of the national championships at the Amateur Boxing Association Championship north west contest in Gorton, Manchester.

Supported by family members, Jack battled it out in the 14 to 15-year-old and 38 to 40kg weight category.

He will now compete at the next stage in Yorkshire for a place in the national finals.

The Norden High School pupil trains three times a week for 90 minutes at Clayton Amateur Boxing Club.

Jack said he got into boxing because of his younger brother Billy and enjoys the sport.

He said: “He started doing it and said it was really good so I joined in. I like to feel proud of myself and it helps me with my confidence.

“On the day there was a lot of other boxers and all of different ages and fighting in different weights. It was really fun to watch and be there.

“I like doing it as a hobby but I’m not sure yet if I want to take it up professionally.”
