A TEENAGER broke his leg after falling through the roof of a derelict building.

The boy, aged 13, was playing with friends on top of the dilapidated Hargreaves warehouse on Blackburn Road, Church, when he fell through the roof to the second floor of the four-storey building.

Fire and ambulance crews were called to scene at 6.30pm on Wednesday.

It took the fire team nearly an hour to rescue the boy who was conscious the entire time.

Fire crews had to use an aerial ladder platform to bring him down to safety.

He was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital and is thought to be doing well.

Police closed off the road for nearly an hour while the rescue was being carried out.

The building is a hotspot for youths to congregate but authorities are keen to stress children should not play there.

A spokesman for Lanca-shire Fire Service said: "If the boy had fallen another six inches to the right he could have fallen another 30 metres, so he is certainly lucky.

"It’s dangerous for children to play in the area and we urge young people to not play on or near derelict buildings."
