Thousands of people are expected to join the revelry at Accrington Carnival this weekend.

Onlookers will pack the street as floats depicting classic film and TV shows parade through the streets leaving the town awash with colour and cheering.

Organisers expect huge crowds to turn out to see guest of honour Michelle Keegan, who plays Tina McIntyre on Coronation Street as she leads the parade.

Michelle Keegan is special guest at this year’s Accrington Carnival

Around 5,000 people attended the last event in 2011.

Carnival Chairman  Tony Clarkson urged the whole community to come along and enjoy the event.

He said: “On the weeks running up to the carnival it is always extremely busy but with the experienced committee that is organising the carnival everything should be all right on the day and we hope the visitors will enjoy themselves and help Accrington Lions to fundraise for the community.”

The big day begins with the annual procession with floats assembling on Thorneyholme Road from 11am on Saturday, June 15.

The parade will then head along Queens Road and Whalley Road, across Eastgate onto Abbey Street and onto Plantation Street, finishing on Park Street.

Carnival-goers are invited to don their best fancy dress in-keeping with the theme and can join the parade and fancy dress contest by contacting carnival organisers.

Carnival Queen Kimberley Robinson and Carnival Princess Dolcie Power will also lead the parade.

A huge range of field events including an It’s A Knockout competition, model trains and scalextrics, stalls and fairground rides will be available on the field at Accrington and Rossendale College. Michelle will judge the brand new Mr Carnival competition and the fancy dress competition.

And there will be a 40 minute dog show featuring trained crime prevention dogs.

We also have another entrant vying for the title of Mr Carnival in 23-year-old Lars Hargreaves.

Lars, from Clayton-le-Moors is a warehouse employee who loves going to the gym, swimming and spending time with his girlfriend.

His ambition is to become rich and to have a happy family with his girlfriend.
