RAF bombers, Land Girls, and the Scouting Movement were some of the costumes on display as Rishton celebrated all things British.

A record crowd of more than 1,000 people flocked to the village for the annual festival which this year had a 'Pride of Britain' theme.

It started off with a parade from Rishton train station to Norden High School with families, children and community groups showing off their British costumes.

Christine Hammerton, of the festival committee, said it was a 'brilliant day'.

She said: “It was absolutely fantastic and the sun shone. All our worries went away from the start as everything went absolutely brilliantly.

“I was very impressed with the costumes people came in to represent the theme.

“There was certainly as many people as last year and probably more judging by the amount of food and drink that was eaten.

“We just want to thank everybody for making it a special day and to all our sponsors and helpers.”

The festival included demonstrations for Active Women, birds of prey, bouncy castles and more than 30 stalls.

For the second year running festival-goers also enjoyed refreshments from the beer and cider tent.

The tent was run by Adrian Wilding, who lost his partner Donna Heyes to meningitis last year, and proceeds were raised for charity Meningitis Now in her memory.

Christine has appealed for more volunteers to help organise next years festival.

She said: “We do need more volunteers, both for the whole day and before hand if it is to continue.

“There was only about four or five of us this time and it just isn't enough to do all the preparation.”
