A CAMERA crew spent an afternoon with Accrington pupils to film a TV documentary about keeping children safe on the journey to and from school.

The Tonight with Trevor McDonald feature will be screened on ITV at 8pm on Monday evening, starring some of the travel prefects from St Christopher's High School.

The travel prefects are Year 11 pupils acting as the eyes and ears on school buses, reporting back to staff if they spot any problems on the journey.

Whether it be bullying, smoking, nuisance behaviour or simply delays in the timetable, the prefects are encouraged to log any incidents.

The scheme is part of a Lancashire County Council initiative to promote pupil safety.

Deputy headteacher Steve Green said: "The camera crew spent most of the afternoon in school. The Year 7 pupils loved the attention but the older pupils were a little more nervous about being individually interviewed. The pupils all take the issue very seriously and if there are any kind of problems, the prefects are straight on to it.

"I will be interested to see what slant the reporters have put on it when the show is screened on Monday."

All travel prefects are awarded a free bus from the Safer Travel Unit and they are trained on how to deal with difficult situations on the bus.

Although they are often encouraged to approach and speak to people who are acting anti-socially, all incidents are reported back to school and dealt with by staff.
