The name ‘Oswaldtwistle’ stirred up an hilarious debate on hit television show Gogglebox.

The Malone family from Manchester were discussing the town on last Friday’s show after Tom Jnr asked his parents Tom Snr and Julie if Oswaldtwistle is a ‘real place’.

A clip of the conversation was quickly posted on social media and has already been watched more than 20,000 times on Facebook and nearly 600 times on YouTube.

The name Oswaldtwistle is believed to come from the word ‘Oswald’ and ‘Twistle’, and Twistle is an old English word meaning ‘brooks meet’.

Gogglebox is an observational documentary on Channel 4 which shows families and friends watching television programmes and giving their views and reactions.

Here is a full transcript of the Oswaldtwistle Gogglebox conversation:

Tom Snr: “Do you know what I’d seen out near Oswaldtwistle the other day as I was taking a wagon in?”

Tom Jnr: “Oswaldtwistle? Is that a real place?”

Tom Snr: “Yeah”

Julie: “Yeah”

Tom Snr: “I was going down the dual carriageway and a deer ran out on the road.”

Tom Jnr: “Let’s skip back. Who named a place Oswaldtwistle?”

Julie: “It’s near Accrington Stanley, isn’t it?”

Tom Snr: “Accrington Stanley is the name of a football team though isn’t it?”

Julie: “Yeah but you see signposts for Accrington Stanley.”

Tom Jnr: “In Oswaldtwistle?”

Julie: “On the way to Os-wald-twistle.”

Tom Jnr: “Os-wald-twistle?”

Julie: “That’s how it’s spelt, Os-wald-twistle.”

Tom Snr: “I don’t know how you spell it, it’s Oswaldtwistle. Anyway, I’m not going on about Oswaldtwistle. I was only saying a deer jumped out on the road. That was it. Next time I’ll just say I’m going to Bury.”
