Anger has greeted the vandalism of several young willow trees, recently planted by volunteers in west Accrington.

The seven 10ft tall willow trees were planted by the cycleway running beside the railway line between Accrington and Church.

The trees were planted by volunteers and Community Payback to help compensate for recent grey alder felling.

Gemma Tomlinson, of Prospects Foundation, said: "It's really disappointing that some people can't just leave newly planted trees alone.

"They were planted by volunteers giving up their own time to improve the local environment which makes the vandalism even more of a kick in the teeth."

If you spot any vandalism call Hyndburn Council's tree officers on 01254 388111.
