A woman was trapped in her car for over an hour last night after it flipped over and smashed into a motorway lamppost.

The 28-year-old had to be cut from her Toyota Yaris near junction 6 of the M65.

Fire, police and ambulance all attended the scene on the Eastbound carriageway at around 6.30pm.

A spokesman for Hyndburn Fire Station said: "The car turned over  near the hard shoulder as she planned to come off the motorway close to the A676 turn off, landed on its side and became wedged against a lamppost. We cut the roof and the side of the car to get to her."

North West Ambulance said the woman was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital with minor injuries.

Police said there were lane closures in place until the woman was freed at around 7.40pm.
