FOOTBALL fever hit Hyndburn this week after more than 1,000 school children took part in their very own World Cup.

Youngsters from more than 30 local primary schools visited Accrington Academy to battle it out in the contest as part of National School Sports Week.

Each school represented one of the countries taking part in the 2014 Brazil World Cup and the event was attended by England Women’s goalkeeper and former St Christopher’s High School pupil Rachel Brown-Finnis.

Schools taking part included St Charles RC, Rishton, who represented England, and St Mary Magdalen’s, playing as Brazil. Andy O’Brien, Academy principal, said it was ‘fantastic’, adding: “With our aim for the coming year being ‘Give Me 5, where every student is encouraged to give five hours of their time per week to sport, this will be a good starting point to promoting a healthy lifestyle, which in turn impacts on a student’s overall learning experience.”
