A garden planted in memory of a former business manager at Norden High School is nearing completion.

The garden at Rishton pre-school, in memory of Helen Hinds, was the brainchild of pre-school manager Irene Lowther.

She said: “Helen Hinds was the business manager at Norden High School and she went off ill in November 2013, but nobody realised how ill she was and she died in January 2014.

“Before she went off ill we had this courtyard garden which was very overgrown and needed a bit of TLC.”

Irene said she had previously talked with Helen to see if they could come up with ways of trying to get funding.

Irene said: “We applied to a few places and Tesco came through and gave us £500 towards having the garden cleared.

“We got it going but then we didn’t have any more funding.

"About a year after Helen died her husband got in touch and said he wanted to donate some money.”

Helen’s husband managed to raise £2,000 and the garden is almost finished.

Pre-school pupils have sown wildflower seeds in the garden and have been learning all about the wildlife they attract.
