The owner of a former town centre hotel has been fined after ignoring a council order to make improvements to the building.

Jane Elizabeth Ramsden, 57, of Walkden Barn Cottages, Accrington appeared at Hyndburn magistrates court after being ordered to repair the dilapidated former Kendalls Hotel at Blackburn Road, Accrington.

She was found guilty of non-compliance with a section 79 notice issued under the Building Act 1984 and ordered to pay £500 in fines and costs.

Coun Clare Cleary, Hyndburn council’s portfolio holder for housing, said: “The council requested works of repair to this former hotel, which is a prominent building in Accrington, near to the new multi-million pound bus station development.

“Some very slow progress was made but works came to a complete stop early last year so the council had no option but to issue a notice ordering works to be done to doors, windows and the roof, along with the removal of rubbish.”

Mrs Ramsden’s solicitor informed the court that the property had been sold and the new owner would take on the notice and carry out the necessary repairs.
