More than 1,000 basked in the glorious weather as they enjoyed the Stanhill Village Fete.

Organisers said record numbers attended the annual event at West End primary school in Oswaldtwistle.

Richard Hooper, from the Stanhill Village Residents Association, said it was ‘probably one of the most successful ever’.

He said: “The weather was very good and there was in excess of 1,000 people with about half of those children.

“We have taken a great deal of money for worthy causes.

“The Mayor Marlene Haworth was there to open the fete and we had all the traditional games and activities. The ice cream stall sold out and most of our refreshments too.

“It was very popular and we will be looking later in the year at how we disperse the money to worthy causes in the local area.”

Coun Haworth said it was an ‘absolutely brilliant day’.

She said: “I have been to every one while I have been councillor which is 12 years and it has rained at every one apart from one.

“The weather this year was an absolute bonus and the place was heaving.

“The organisers did really well and everybody enjoyed it. It was great.”
