Police are hunting three men who robbed a man at a cash point in the early hours of New Year's Day.

The victim was withdrawing money from a cash machine on St James Street at around 6am when three men ran up to him and punched him in the head.

They then made off with his cash, wallet and debit card. DS Adrian McHugh said the men were in their late teens or early 20s and wearing dark clothing and appealed for anyone who may have witnessed anything to come forward.

He said: “This was quite a violent and unprovoked attack and we would appeal for anyone who witnessed anything to come forward.”

He added the victim had chased the offenders through the town centre in a 'cat and mouse' game before they escaped and said police were approaching local taxi firms to determine whether the men then took a taxi away from the area.

Anyone with information should call police on 101.
